Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine
Andrew is a third-year medical student at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a Texas native and graduated from Texas A&M University in 2017 and was a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. He then completed his master’s degree at Georgetown University in 2020. During medical school, he founded and served as the chair of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Committee at his school where he introduced and exposed students to the field. He completed a summer research internship with the Medical University of South Carolina where he investigated the molecular and immunological mechanisms surrounding the new congenital cardiac procedure, Partial Heart Transplantation. While he continues his research in congenital cardiac surgery, he is passionate about improving medical student surgical education and expanding opportunities in cardiothoracic surgery and surgical research for students at smaller schools. He developed a series of projects dedicated to assessing how students become interested in cardiothoracic surgery while also determining negative factors associated with the field and how to ameliorate them. He took this study to the national level and surveyed ACOS-MSS on the topic and witnessed firsthand how critical this association is to osteopathic medical students interested in surgery. Furthermore, he serves on the Projects and Proposals Committee for the Thoracic Surgery Medical Student Association where he hopes to promote the field to those who may not have access to many resources. In his free time, Andrew enjoys spending time with his dog, Radar, and working on his Ford Mustang.
